Overview

How it all started

When you’re driving in a car or walking along the street with kids, don’t you find that they get all excited when they come across a “special” vehicle? And that any vehicle can become special in their eyes?

When they were reading books about vehicles at home, my two sons started asking me where the taxis were. When I pointed out the London taxi in a book, they insisted: “That’s not a taxi! It’s not red, or green, or blue!” Well, that got me. Because to them it’s the vehicles they see outside every day that are fun and exciting.

So I created a hand-made little book for them. It had pictures of all their friends and the vehicles they liked. Just photographs stuck into a notebook. And then I made some for their friends too, and that’s how the idea of “My Hong Kong Vehicles Book” took off.

How it all started

When you’re driving in a car or walking along the street with kids, don’t you find that they get all excited when they come across a “special” vehicle? And that any vehicle can become special in their eyes? It seems to start with taxis, then moves on to rubbish trucks, buses and diggers. Police cars and firetrucks are always firm favourites. (In my family we also have what the boys call dim-sum vans and speedy cars.)

They couldn’t identify with the pictures in the books set in other places.

So I created a hand-made little book for them. It had pictures of all their friends and the vehicles they liked. Just photographs stuck into a notebook. And then I made some for their friends too, and that’s how the idea of “My Hong Kong Vehicles Book” took off.

Why Crowdfunding

The goal of this crowdfunding campaign is to prove that there is a market audience for my unique My HK Vehicles Book.  This will allow me to market to retailers and distributors to hopefully get my book sold in stores. The funds will also allow me to expand into other products such as a My HK Vehicles Sticker Book and baby board book, so children of all ages can enjoy the unique vehicles in Hong Kong. This campaign is also to raise awareness of Operation Breakthrough.

The book – Let’s take a look inside

My boys helped make this book, so it includes everything they like – and even a few they didn’t know they liked!

The book contains more than 150 pictures, ranging from the ships we can see on the harbour to airplanes and airport vehicles and police cars.

The name of each vehicle is written in English and Cantonese (in traditional characters). PLUS there’s a pronunciation guide at the back for learners of English or Cantonese.

And the book has a hard cover with lovely glossy images, so kids will enjoy it for many years to come.

Proudly supporting Operation Breakthrough

HK$20 (that’s about US$2.50) from the sale of each book will go to Operation Breakthrough, a charity close to my heart because it works locally in Hong Kong, helping to turn children’s lives around through sport. When I was a teenager, sport helped me keep my self-esteem and move away from the bullying I was going through, so I understand how powerful the work that Operation Breakthrough is doing can be.

In their own words, “Operation Breakthrough uses sport as a means to help, rehabilitate and positively reinforce young people from disadvantaged backgrounds or families: helping to fight crime and juvenile delinquency amongst low-income and immigrant communities.”

About me and my future plans

I founded my company, run’em ragged, which was inspired by my boys. My aim is to keep kids entertained so they have fun, stay busy and learn so parents can relax – without reaching for technology!  Inspired by day-to-day needs, I’ll be launching new products on a regular basis. My current products include my own 2015 Christmas Cards and Tooth Fairy Packets and distribution of Wee Targets which are from Australia.
